Pork of the town

Hugh Crabtree, a Pig trade supplier travelled to London to record a soundtrack for local Pig farmers.

The Reading musician from Wokingham Road joined forces with a mixed bunch of farmers from all over country to sing ‘Stand by Your Ham’, a cover of Tammy Wynette’s traditional “Stand By Your Man”.

Mr Crabtree owns a business supplying goods to pig farmers from Pingewood Business Park, and has recorded the single in an attempt to highlight the need fairer prices.

The musician and ex-vice chairman of the National Pigs Association had worked as a supplier to the pig industry for more than 20 years and was keen to get involved and help where he could.

The song is a slightly tongue-in-cheek way of raising awareness for what has become a very serious issue. Farmers need to get more for their pigs or face going out of business.

If the song can generate a response then the option of selling the single and giving any profits to charity will be a reality.

Support your local farmers by looking for the Quality Standard Mark on pork, bacon, ham and sausages. This helps support farmers who produce to higher standards of welfare.

The song will be available for download at www.pigsareworthit.co.uk
