First Community Mag for Woodley
A former beauty therapist from Earley has packed in life on the road as a Clarins quality controller for the independence and challenge of working for herself.

Liz Chaplin is launching Woodley’s first community magazine – Community Times Woodley (CTW) – at the end of October with a November issue packed with guides to local businesses, seasonal features and reader opportunities to win big competition prizes. The magazine is part of a national network of franchised magazines with Liz, as licensee, managing every aspect of the Woodley edition including design, publication, print and administration.

“Community Times Woodley is a great opportunity for local shops and traders to tap into the market on their doorstep,” Liz told Business in Woodley. “We’ll be printing 3000 copies each month for distribution door-to-door right across the RG5 postcode area and it will also be available from local centres like dentists’ and doctors’ surgeries.”

The basis of the business is advertising revenue and Liz has been busy papering local businesses with the Community Times offer. “I always enjoy meeting and talking with people so approaching businesses for their support is something I really enjoy,” said Liz who has a one-year licence for the area. She plans to earn back her investment in the project over the first three issues.

“There may be an opportunity to buy into another area but we’ll see how this year goes first,” she added.

So why did Liz choose publishing as her first solo business venture?

“I wanted something I could manage around my family better than working for other people usually allows,” she said. “CTW gives me a lot of control – you have to be committed to make it a success of course but how far you go is up to you. And I like that.

“There’s a lot of support, too, so you’re not entirely on your own, but it’s the interaction with local businesses I’m enjoying most.

“I’ll be visiting most each month to find out how well CTW is doing for them and I’m looking forward to the magazine playing a part in their ongoing success.”

The first issue of the Community Times – Woodley magazine will be available from 23 October, together with its supporting website at www.ctwoodley.co.uk
