On 15th & 16th November the 5th international confrontation of the world’s best sparkling wines, Effervescents du Monde®, organised by Forum Oenologie took place in Dijon (France).
Competing against over 400 wines from 24 different countries, 60 international expert judges placed a sparkling wine from Theale in the top 10. Other top countries included France, Italy, Argentina and Australia.
Located in Berkshire near the offices of Laithwaites, the Theale Vineyard which only measures 200 square metres (2150 sq feet) introduced its first wine in 2006.
In 1998 when Laithwaites, Britain’s top mail order wine merchant, built their new property on a brown field site, Tony Laithwaite, the company’s owner recognised an opportunity to use some surplus land to try and grow vines to produce an exclusive English wine. In 2000 an artificial hill facing south was constructed and planted with Chardonnay vines imported from Champagne.
Only 756 bottles of this 100% Chardonnay wine were made. It can be obtained from the Laithwaites shop in Theale or by calling 0870 4448282 for home delivery.
Earlier this year, the same wine also received a Silver Medal at the world’s premier wine competition, The International Wine Challenge.
The 6th Effervescents du Monde® confrontation will be held on 13 and 14 November 2008 in Dijon.
