Gordon Brown sees in New Year in Hospital

Gordon Brown saw in his first New Year as Prime Minister by visiting Wexham Park Hospital in Slough. Accompanied by his wife by Sarah and Health Secretary, Alan Johnson, he walked the hospital thanking the dedicated crew of nurses, consultants and support staff for their sterling efforts over the holiday season.

The visit was lead by Trust Chairman Dr Timothy Lincoln and accompanied by Chief Executive Colin Hayton, and Evelyn Barker, Chief Operating officer and Deputy Chief Executive. During the tour they stopped in on the A&E department (currently taking advantage of a £13 million development programme), the Stroke Unit, and the Eden Unit, the new Haematology/Oncology Unit recently opened at Wexham Park Hospital.

Mr Brown made clear how impressed he was at the Trust‘s performance financially and against key targets as well as how well the A&E Department manages with the ever growing attendances during the holiday season, which is one of the busiest periods of the year.

Mr Brown said: “The most important thing for the NHS is that it concentrates on care, preventing illness, and providing services to meet personal needs”.

He also went on to comment on how well the hospital had adapted the ward for the new Eden Unit for cancer patients and the Stroke Unit with regards to the new guidance from the Department of Health for improving stroke care.

Mr Brown showed particular interest in the Children’s A&E Department and stopped to chat with many of the children and parents there. He then went on to launch the national celebrations to which marked 60 years of the NHS.
