Slough Landmark Set to Disappear

Slough’s Brunel Bus Station, a famous local landmark, could soon be assigned to history according to an ambitious new scheme to redevelop and regenerate the heart of the town. The iconic building, which achieved recent fame thanks to an appearance in the introductory sequence of ‘The Office’, is both loved and hated by locals for its quirky 1960s design.

Slough has been enjoying a renaissance of late, with many businesses choosing to relocate to the area, plans to build a luxury hotel opposite the train station, and general redevelopment of the town centre during the past 5 years. The next step will effectively change the face of Slough for years to come. Entitled the ‘Heart of Slough’, the scheme was first dreamed up 9 years ago and includes plans for a new bus station, shops, restaurants and cafes, as well as a new library.

The target area for development is the Brunel roundabout, with housing, office space, and a new crossroads replacing the current layout. All of which spells the end for the old Bus Station which is set for demolition as the plans move forward.

The likely location for the new bus station is adjacent to the O2 headquarters, close to Wellington Street, with its main entrance from Brunel Way beside the train station.

The area has changed dramatically since the 1960s when the Brunel Bus Station replaced a quaint row of Georgian houses (against much local opposition). Considered an eyesore even in its heyday, the modern concrete building sat uncomfortably alongside the old Licensed Victuallers’ School Building, the Royal Hotel, and the Grade II listed station itself.

Today, the building stands out for different reasons – it certainly looks shabby and rundown compared to its modern neighbours. It’s doubtful many will mourn its demise once it has gone, although it will signal the end of an era as the town moves on to the next chapter in its development.
