Healthy Prospects in West Berkshire
Budding entrepreneurs could do far worse than set up business in West Berkshire, with the news that the area enjoys above-average health.
Profiles commissioned by the Department of Health have revealed that local residents can expect to live longer than the UK average and fewer people in the area believe themselves to be in poor health.
West Berkshire also enjoys lower rates of diabetes and drug misuse than most places in England and the number of under-75s dying from heart disease, strokes, and cancer is below the national average.
In addition, incidences of severe mental illness are low, adding to the list of reasons giving Berkshire residents cause to celebrate their health.
Graham jones, leader of West Berkshire Council, told Newbury Today: "We are delighted that these profiles confirm the positive picture of health and the environment in West Berkshire".
He added: "We are working closely with other public and voluntary services and the business community to ensure that West Berkshire is an excellent place to live and work for the whole community".
Dr Jane Wells, director of publich health in West Berkshire, added: "These profiles give a picture of a healthy thriving local community and it is encouraging to see that West Berkshire is better than the national average on almost every measure."
The figures did reveal, however, that obesity leveles are higher in West Berkshire than elsewhere in the South-East, with around 21.5% of residents estimated to be severely overweight.
