New Junior Mayor Elected |
|
Newbury Young People’s Council recently held their annual election for Junior Mayor. After receiving election speeches from three candidates, the vote named Melissa Stevens as the new Junior Mayor and Leon Larkings, a long standing member of the NYPC, as Deputy Junior Mayor.
Melissa expressed her delight as she took her new pendant from outgoing Junior Mayor Jenny Moorcroft. "It was a bit of a shock that I was voted Junior Mayor, as I am a fairly new member of the Newbury Young Peoples Council! At the same time, I also felt grateful that I was given an equal opportunity by the rest of the councillors. I would like to raise awareness as to the fact that Newbury has very little activities for the younger and older generations, and I am hoping I can get more participation in clubs and groups." The aims of Newbury Young Peoples Council are to deal with issues that affect young people in our community. At the moment they are campaigning for a better image for teenagers of our town, trying to show that most of today’s youth are pleasant, polite and helpful members of the community, not a section of society to be feared as some media would like to portray. The NYPC meets monthly at the Town Hall in Newbury. If you are between 12 and 21 and would like to come along to one of our meetings, contact either Sue Page or Karen Hutt on 01635 35486 for further details. |
