The West Berkshire Council have bought six bikes for employees to share in order for them to travel between offices and work related engagements.
The Council launched the bicycle sharing scheme outside its Market Street offices to encourage employees get to travel in a greener way. With routes between council offices at Market Street, Faraday Road, Avonbank and Shaw House, the scheme aims to attract plenty of attention with the hopes of gaining sponsorship. West Berkshire Council invested around £1,700 to make the bicycles available for employees to use in the hope that it will encourage other employers to do the same. The Council offices have received new lockers and showers too for the staff to use on arrival to the premises. This is the first move in what is hoped to be a great success with eventually more bikes at work. The Council’s main objective is the opportunity to link up cycle lanes in an attempt to make Newbury a safer environment for people to travel through. With levels of traffic on the increase this solution would seem to be the easiest way to get around Newbury, and this is why West Berkshire Council is strongly recommending that people use their bikes through town. www.businessinnewbury.co.uk
