Tour of Britain - Newbury
Newbury hope to be part of this year’s “Tour of Britain”. If Newbury council agree, then the town will host part of the race on September 8th.
For safety reasons, the event organisers have approached the town councillors to see if they would be able to close roads and suspend parking within the last 8 kilometres of the race. The Arts and Leisure committee of the town council have agreed to set up a group to look into hosting part of the contest.
The competition will last for 8 days through various towns and cities. Leader of the town council Ian Grose stated: “I think this is an absolutely wonderful opportunity to showcase the best part of Newbury.”
The event needs to raise £50,000 from sponsorship, the district and town councils, and grants.
Paul Rowlands, who spoke on behalf of the Tour of Britain, said the planned route would be for cyclists to come in south along the A4, from Hungerford.
He said: “We’re looking for commitment quite quickly; ideally we’re looking to launch the race to the national media by the end of March.”
