The Ploughing Match
The Ploughing Match will take place on Saturday 21st October at West Woodhay by kind permission of our President Harry Henderson.
It starts at 9am.
It is a popular event in our show calendar and is regularly contested by around 75 local ploughing champions. There are classes for conventional, reversible and horse-drawn ploughs, as well as expanding classes for vintage tractors and ploughs and also vintage horticultural machinery.
One of the popular attractions is the horses. These magnificently turned out animals take spectators back to the days when farming was a quieter, gentler way of life.
But probably the biggest crowd pleasers are the steam ploughs.
We have the oldest matched pair of steam ploughing engines in the country.
We will ensure that there is much more at the Ploughing Match than just ploughing. We hope to have some trade stands, craft stalls and working demonstrations providing a rich mixture of rural arts and crafts, and the chance to see the latest tractors and tillage equipment in action.
The aim of the day is to educate.
In partnership with Farming and Countryside Education we plan to run some activities with an educational theme for our many young visitors including painting competitions, seed recognition and other agricultural based “games”.
The entrance fee is £3.00 per adult and under 16s are free
