London Underground to Trial Mobile Service
The below-ground sections of the London Underground are one of the few places where commuters cannot currently use their mobile phones. In response to growing public demand, the LU are planning to trial mobile phone services in 2008, starting with the Waterloo & City line.
Strategy and Services Director, Richard Parry, explained that the LU are currently seeking submissions from mobile operators who would be keen to take part in the trial which initially will include Bank and Waterloo stations and the tunnels that link them. “We recognise that there is now growing demand for mobile coverage to be extended to deep-level sections of the Tube” he added. A successful trial will mean involving a private-sector operator or consortium to manage the mobile services which ultimately could include internet access and digital media. It is thought the plan could see fruition as early as 2009. Previous attempts at establishing some kind of mobile access on the tube have been fraught with problems. One proposal put forward 2 years ago suggested coverage only on platforms, a solution which proved impractical due to the anticipated overload of mobile networks as passengers disembarked the trains and reached for their phones. The LU claim that a recent survey told them 56% of travellers were in favour of having mobile access whilst underground. One advantage of connectivity is that commuters could access the mobile services offered by Transport for London, which includes up-to-the-minute travel news and updates. The proposed mobile phone trial has no link with the implementation of Connect, a new digital radio system which is currently being trialled on the underground and is expected to be introduced across the whole tube network before the end of the year. www.businessinberkshire.co.uk/businessinlondon
