Cycling Caversham couple returning from China

A couple from Berkshire have started their return journey to the UK from China by bike, having cycled nearly 7,000 miles to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.

Richard Mason and Kat Wilkinson from Caversham have spent the last nine months cycling across 20 countries in honour of Ms Wilkinson's mother, who passed away from cancer in 2004.

The two, who set off from Berkshire in June last year, are expected to get back on their bikes today to complete their roundtrip.

They have already raised more than £5,000 for the charity, but hope to double the amount before they get back home.

Speaking to the BBC about reaching their target destination China, Mr Mason said the pair were "extremely proud" of their achievement.

He added that it had been "far tougher - both physically and mentally" than they had anticipated.

Some of the physical tribulations the pair faced on their journey so far include two falls, five punctures and seven "significant dog chases".

Mr Mason and Ms Wilkinson will start their journey back to the UK today and they hope to be back in Berkshire by June.

They will fly to Germany before hopping on their bikes once again, cycling to Switzerland and through to France, before taking a ferry to Britain.
