Generating new business then THINK LOCAL |
|
Business happens when 2 people talk to each other in real time.
So if you are looking to generate new business in 2010 you need to get off your computer, THINK LOCAL, pick up the yellow pages and get “smiling and dialing”! Make appointments with businesses that can use what you’ve got and go and visit them in person with a 1 page flyer that you can leave behind to be a permanent reminder of you … better still, walk away with an order!! Here speaketh Jon Davey, Social Media Director, online marketing guru, business lead generator and a whole bunch of other titles made up on the fly to suit a particular online marketing mission I was on at the time! At the back end of the summer I decided that I needed to redefine myself to attract the right sort of attention from the Internet. Researching the online marketing world and what was happening in the USA I decided that I would hence forth be known as a Social Media Director and so went on a mission to dominate that space on Google and YouTube ... I achieved my goal but the £££ still aren’t rolling in at the rate one would hope with all the energy being put in ... a carbon offset nightmare !!! WHAT’S HAPPENING? OR MAYBE I SHOULD BE ASKING WHY IS IT NOT HAPPENING?? It’s very simple really. The web, for most businesses, is a marketing tool and NOT a sales tool. Too many things can happen between seeing something on the web and getting round to making the purchase. The other day when the government announced we were officially out of recession with a 0.1% growth I had to laugh. Tell that to the tens of thousands of businesses across the UK that in 2009 had their worst year in history. This was reinforced this morning by an email from Business Link saying the UK had emerged from recession … and they wonder why real businesses men and women prefer to consult with their local publican on business matters!! Business happens when 2 people talk to each other in real time. This year I have switched from 80% copy creation and online activity to 80% email & telemarketing activity and this is enabling me to dig out real business opportunities. Promoting our Managed Email Marketing Campaign service. It’s straight forward and the best way of achieving real business results, call me on 01753 852904. By lunchtime yesterday I'd had some good conversation but nothing agreed so I set myself the target on landing a deal before I’d break for lunch. Thirty minutes later and I was talking to Jeremy Stock of Run-Print-Run.co.uk who had found me via the web, completed our online form which triggered an email to my inbox. He was pitching himself and it made me smile so I called him up, we had a banter and he explained how he’d rather spend money with local businesses to help them succeed and so I explained how I was local and how about spending a few quid with me?? “So what can you do for me?” Jeremy asked “I can make you famous!” I replied. “I can increase your visibility via the web, promote your business to all those who tune into my newsletters and I will commit to spending at least 20% of what you give me with another local business. How’s that for starters??” “Go on then, invoice me £200 + VAT and let’s get this show on the road!!” I sent over a PayPal request for the money and by the time I returned from lunch and walking the dog the money was in my account … marvellous !! There was also an email from one of my business contacts Richard Knight, who is setting up a new business network in Bracknell, looking for sponsorship for his event … I called him as he was on his way into a meeting with the new Bracknell conservative hopeful Philip Lee … we’ll discuss matters later … I like this ethos, spending 20% of your revenue with local businesses makes a great deal of sense. You can’t get everything you need locally but you should be willing to pay a few extra pounds to ensure the money stays in the community and so more people benefit from the cash flow … I wrote about the Regional Economic Multiplier a couple of years ago and went banging on about it … at the time I was actually made to feel racist by chanting such propaganda … what a load of blocks, we need to be looking out for our neighbours as well as ourselves and shopping in the Far East doesn’t work so STOP, think what you are doing and THINK LOCAL. Thank you for taking the time to read this and if you are a local business and would like to talk about how we can help each other then please call Jon on 01753 852904. |
