It’s been a tad snowy this week but that’s all, just a tad. Being a northerner abroad means I know what real snow is all about. We’d have snow for weeks when I was a lad! The shoe box we lived in would get full in minutes, forcing us to move t’ole in't ground and ask to share with mr badger!
One dollop of 4” of snow and the whole of Berkshire grinds to a halt, its bonkers, especially the fact the kids were off yesterday as well. I guess the schools are paranoid about kids getting injured playing in the snow outside school or being sued because little jimmy has banged his head in the corridor after running on the wet floor and trying to slide into his classroom, showing off to his pals. I dunno, seems like children never get to behave like children anymore!! I know its been a bit of a nightmare for many parents who still had to struggle in to work, trying to work out emergency childcare too. But for some it was a once in a blue moon great opportunity to have some fun at home!!! As you can see from the photo if you’re reading this on the web, or click here if you are reading the email, I was ready for action on Monday. Bravely protecting my shed from Charlie, Ali & Max, Chloe captured this great pic in her slippers from the kitchen door. Went off sledging for an hour before we all came home in tears ‘cos our fingers and toes were falling off. All part of the 2009 business plan, seize the day, appointment was cancelled and I would have been out for at least 2 hours so there was no excuse, let battle commence! Talking about money, Windsor council are bigging up a lower than average increase in council tax, the finance chap saying “in real terms it will be £50 less” although the increase is 1.9%. He must have been working in the city! If it’s in my hand then its REAL, cash is king in these trying times so make sure you get paid at least your costs up front and the balance at an agreed time. That way if they stitch you for the balance you can stay afloat. Reading the Windsor council report on how they plan on spending the money. There is talk of £5m on roads and pavements, cash on wardens and CCTV to keep us safe but where is the money being set aside to rewire Windsor? Last week we had two power cuts on Saturday morning. When I bumped into a man from the Electricity board in his shed fiddling with buttons he said it was because the old cables were getting wet and breaking. I think this is going to be my little hobby horse for 2009. We need electricity to the homes and businesses or everything stops, the computer says NO! They are giving constant permission for blocks of flats to be built around the town but don’t really seem to be giving consideration to the infrastructure. I’ll have to make some enquiries. There seems to be £500,000 showing up in the energy saving budget. Not sure if this is part of the SEEDA Green grant I’ve been hearing about with a few of the councils coming together with Business Link. Can’t spend too much time on that though, got a business to run and need to drive revenues first and foremost.
