Yomping the Nation hits Berkshire

Yesterday afternoon, in the extremely convivial brainstorming environment of Reading University, 10 “experts” and 50 students showed how they could absorb knowledge at a rapid rate.
Impressing an audience of peers, experts, sponsors and university professors with their presentations which took shape during the course of the day… culminating in a show down at the Great Hall where the Magnificent 7 became 1 in a business presentation shoot out! What is Yomp? (From the main website) Yomp is a new and genuinely challenging way to learn about how businesses are created and grown. Using a unique simulation method, it focuses on the key decisions that businesses have to take to be successful. Participants have to agree on why and when those decisions have to be taken and how they then join together to form a coherent strategy. Yomp is suitable for exploring the planning of any venture, from a high-tech start-up to a charity. And it encourages participants to understand the importance of collaboration, communication, creativity and organisation within that planning process. Who Uses It? Developed with the help of the Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning at the University of Cambridge, Yomp is now used in a range of educational contexts across the UK. These include: • With executives at NTT DoCoMo and at Haniel GmbH • Within business plan competitions at Cambridge University and at the Scottish Institute of Enterprise • With undergraduates at the five universities in the North East of England • With post graduates at Durham University as part of the UKGrad programme • With A-Level students at Hills Road Sixth Form college, Cambridge Flexible Solution Yomp can be used in a wide range of environments and is as flexible as you want it to be. Yomp uses scenarios built around actual company stories and as a result provides the ability for participants to develop a business and then compare their own results with what happened to that same business in real-life. Through proprietary devices such as the 'Equity Wheel' Yomp also helps those who use it to come to terms with the concepts of equity valuation and ownership and cash flow management. It is simple to incorporate Yomp into an existing training schedule and can provide all participants with a highly entertaining and interactive alternative to learning about the business development process. Back to the competition - What is Yomping the Nation? Yomp Limited have the buy in of 40 universities across the country and more taking an interest every week. Yomping the Nation is educational and also a promotional tool for Yomp. A great exercise for all those involved. Not just the students but the “experts” as well. Not being an English major I am guessing when I say that expert is formed from experience… and this was the aim of the competiton. For the students, in their teams of between 4 – 8, to work on a business plan which they would present to a board, made up of experienced business people. The first part had them using the Yomp toolkit. The second, to have 15 minute appointments with the 2 experts on finance, marketing, people, strategy & actions where their aim was to gather up the experience of these aged beings! From this information, they put together a 5 minute presentation and prepared themselves to answer questions from the board. The interview and presentation were scored by the experts and the top two teams were given the chance to do a 2 minute elevator pitch to a businessman in a lift. These pitches were then judged by everyone who had had some input into the day and the winners were… The University of Brighton’s team of Jenny Hubbard, Kirsty Chase, Claire Lucky, Martin Carascon & Lexi Mills. They are the regional winners and will go into battle at the National Finals to be held… More coming soon… (What gave the win even more significance was they were designers, not business people, who had not been entered by the University but had found out about Yomping the Nation and taken their own steps to be part of it… excellent motivation.) Don’t wait for others to make things happen… believe in yourself and you make it happen… To find out more visit the website www.yomp.com
