How to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint |
|||
How to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint - TODAY We know we should be trying to reduce our carbon footprint, but what’s the best way to get started? What can you start doing today to make a difference? Here are some ideas you can put into action straightaway; follow these instructions and by the end of today you will have made a contribution to reducing global warming. Electricity is one of the biggest producers of carbon emissions, so by keeping a close eye on your electricity consumption you will automatically reduce your footprint – and save money at the same time. • Turn off electrical appliances when not in use – the lights, TV, DVD player, radio, laptop etc • Try turning the central heating down a notch or two • And while you’re there, turn down the water heating too (2 degrees wil make a significant saving) • When boiling a kettle, use only the amount you need • Only use your dishwasher or washing machine with a full load • When charging a mobile phone, unplug it as soon as it is charged • Defrost your freezer – this can make a huge difference to its efficiency • Avoid using the car for short journeys – why not walk or cycle instead • Try car-sharing for work or school runs Any of these ideas can be implemented today and will cost you nothing. Consider also the secondary footprint incurred through your typical buying habits. Changing what you buy can make a difference to the environment too. Here’s some examples: • Stick to locally sourced foods that are in season to minimize transportation • If your tap water is safe to drink, don’t buy bottled • Try growing your own herbs and vegetables • Avoid products that use lots of packaging • Recycle as much as possible As you practice minimizing your carbon footprint you will find it becomes an automatic process you’ll do almost without thinking. You’ll feel better knowing you’re making a difference – however small – to the environment, and by saving energy you will also be saving money. www.businessinberkshire.co.uk
