West Berkshire doubles its Recycling ability
A new multi-million pound scheme will see a two fold increase of household recycling in the district thanks to West Berkshire Council and Veolia Environmental Services (UK) Plc.
Under a Private Finance Initiative the council have secured £50 million of government money to pay for the new recycling project.
The large sum of money will enable the purchase of new recycling vehicles and the setup of a new recycling regime which will begin later this year. The new scheme will deal better with the processing and disposal of recyclables and refuse.
From April every household in West Berkshire will receive new recycling containers for glass, paper, card and plastic bottles and cans. Residents will also receive a new wheelie bin in the summer for the free collection of garden waste, with household waste being collected as usual in their existing bins.
The new contract will also go towards the management of the Household Waste Recycling Centre in Newbury, a dedicated facility for separation of recycled materials.
Keith McGurk (Veolia Environmental Services) and Councillor Geoff Findlay went out to witness the scheme in action with the first new recycling vehicles going out on their rounds on Monday (24th March 2008).
