Creating energy is a breeze

The University of Reading has announced plans to develop a wind turbine site for the town. The wind farm project is going to be shared between the University and Carbon Trust Partnerships for Renewables.

The plan is to erect six 125m (410ft) high-tech turbines on land at Rushy Mead, Shinfield, which is next to the M4 (between Junctions 10 and 11).

These turbines could generate approximately 26GWh of green energy per year, saving 11,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Professor Gordon Marshall, vice-chancellor at the University of Reading, stated "The development of renewable energy projects sits right at the heart of much of the university's world renowned research into sustainability and climate change issues".

He added: “There is still a lot of work to do to ensure that any proposal at Rushy Mead is sympathetically designed to the local environment and proves a real asset to both the university and the local community”.

Both Carbon Trust Partnerships for Renewables and the University have said that they will confer with the local community with regards to the proposal, and that public presentations will be held.
