The UK Carbon Footprint Project

Play your part in reducing global warming.

Using fossil fuels increases the levels of carbon dioxide in the environment, which in turn plays a huge part in global warming. Reducing your company’s use in these fuels and using energy more intelligently, will help lower the amount of greenhouse gases produced.

For ideas on how your company can play its part in reducing global warming, please consider the options below:

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Try and use reusable products or buy goods with minimal packaging. Whenever you can (at home or in the office) recycle paper, plastics, glass and cans. If your company does not have a recycling programme, think about starting one up.

Insulate your buildings

Filling your walls and roof space and ensuring your door and windows are fully insulated can lower your heating costs by over 25%. This will cut down on the amount of energy you need to heat and cool your working environment. This means that your energy bills will also be lower.

Update your light bulbs

Replace your light bulbs with compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. CFLs not only last 10 times as long as a regular light bulb, but they also use 66% less energy and give off less heat.

Cut down on driving

Reduce the amount of driving that you do. Apart from saving on petrol, if you are able to work/cycle to work, you increase the amount of exercise too. Consider organising a carpooling system for work.

If you have to drive to a business meeting, offer to pick up other attendees, it is another great opportunity to network.

Switch appliances “Off”

When you leave a room you can save electricity and reduce global warming just by turning off the lights.

Also try to remember to turn off your television, video player, stereo and computer when you're not using them.

Increase the Oxygen in your atmosphere

If you have the means, plant a tree or two. During photosynthesis, trees and other plants absorb carbon dioxide and give off oxygen. A single tree will absorb roughly one ton of carbon dioxide during its lifetime. Sponsoring gardens, trees, etc, is great publicity for your company.
