Secret bank data sold to the highest bidder
Financial details of tens of thousands of Britons have found there way on to the internet in what has become one of the largest security breaches the UK has seen.
People’s private details are being sold online by illegal hacking sites who offer up the PINS, security codes and account numbers of their victims to the highest bidder.
Scotland Yards Information Commissioner, Richard Thomas, will begin an investigation into what has become a security breach of epic proportions matched only by the recent blunder of HM Revenue & customs who have as yet to recover the two missing CDs that contain the bank details of over 25 million Britons.
These details have an estimated value of over £100 million for the data theft hacking community.
Current information suggests that this is one of the worst cases of data theft to date, with more personal data than ever before being hijacked.
How do they steal your identity?
It all starts with the misuse of your personal information; your name and National Insurance number, credit card numbers, or other financial account information.
Identity thieves will use a variety of techniques to get hold of this information such as:
Dumpster Diving. As the name suggests they go through your bin looking for any information that might contain personal information: bills, receipts and bank statements.
Skimming. They steal credit/debit card numbers by using a special storage device when processing your card.
Phishing. They pretend to be various companies or institutions and send pop-up or spam messages to your computer in order to get you to reveal your personal information.
Changing Your Address. They redirect your statements and other billing information to another location by completing a change of address form.
Stealing. Theft of wallets, purses and mail, including bank and credit card statements.
Unfortunately these crimes are usually only detected once serious financial damage has been taken place. Remember to regularly check your credit report for changes you did not make as this is one of the best ways to tackle identity theft.
