Nobel nominee back at home
Nobel Peace Prize nominee Sir Nicholas Winton is back in Berkshire, it has been reported.
After a hectic few weeks, Sir Nicholas, 98, was honoured by the ministry of Defence in the Czech Republic for his efforts in World War II when he was responsible for saving the lives of hundreds of Jewish children, the Maidenhead Advertiser reports. Following a documentary on his efforts in the war - which saw him save at least 669 children - 32,000 Czech kids signed a petition and Sir Nicholas was put forward for the award. "Certainly the Nobel Prize, he thinks, is nothing to do with him. He does not think it is appropriate for what he did," his son Nick Winton remarked to the publication. According to Mr Winton, his father was not interested in meeting dignitaries in the country but merely the children he saved, who are now thought to have 5,000 descendants. Sir Nicholas - who has already been awarded with an MBE - unfortunately fell ill during his trip and was flown back from a hospital in Prague to recuperate in Pinkneys Green. www.businessinberkshire.co.uk
