Service of Thanksgiving at St. George's Chapel
The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh will be attending a Service of Thanksgiving at St. George's Chapel Windsor on the 23rd of April.
This will mark the 660th anniversary of the Founding of the Order of the Garter and the College of St. George, and the 60th anniversary of the reintroduction of the annual Garter service by King George VI.
After the service Her Majesty, The Queen and His Royal Highness will give a reception for those attending the service in the State Apartments.
The Order of the Garter is the highest order in the United Kingdom and the oldest surviving order of chivalry in the world. In 1348 Edward III formed a band of distinguished soldiers to inspire loyalty and encourage military excellence. At the same time, the King founded the College of St George.
There is deep-seated association connecting the Royal Family and St George's Chapel. Many Members of the Royal Family have been baptised, married and buried there. Most recently, in April 2005, there was a Service of Prayer and Dedication following the Marriage of HRH The Prince of Wales and HRH The Duchess of Cornwall.
The College is undergoing an important 12 year refurbishment scheme and to mark the anniversaries of 2008, there will be an exhibition in the Dean's Cloister (at the exit of the Chapel) from 8 April to 24 May. The exhibition is open to the public when the Chapel is open to visitors.
People will be able to see for themselves some of the outstanding skills and craftsmanship being used.
