Queen backs Ascot dress code

The Queen has made public her support for a stricter dress code to be introduced to the World Famous Ascot Race Course later this year that will outlaw bare midriffs and miniskirts.

The new dress code will only apply to patrons of the royal enclosure. It's hoped however, that the new rules will improve the attire of the everyday racegoer too.

Anyone caught flouting the rules can expect to be turned away on the orders of Her Majesty's representative, the Duke of Devonshire.

The duke, the chairman of the course, has clarified the new dress code to all 80,000 Royal Enclosure badge holders. This action was taken after the outrage of long-standing racegoers in relation to the amount of bare flesh and tattoos on display at the five-day festival last year.

One Royal Enclosure badge holder stated: "The duke, with the Queen's backing, is trying to keep the 'chav' factor down. I hope he succeeds. It's not been the same in the last few years. You never know quite where to look with all those celebrity girls."

The code for gentlemen is top hats, morning suits and waistcoats.

The updated parameters for ladies states that they must wear hats or "substantial fascinators" (Ascot terminology for feathered adornments).

Off-the-shoulder halter-necks are out, along with multi-strapped dresses where the "strap is less than one inch wide".

Miniskirts are considered "unsuitable" by the duke. Trouser suits are permissible for women as "long as they use matching material".

No exceptions will be made this year for anyone who defies the code.

The board overseeing Royal Ascot are hopeful that the new guidelines will make it easier for racegoers to choose their outfits accordingly and avoid any embarrassing entry refusals.
