Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire Knighted
Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire Philip Wroughton (The man in charge of organising the Queen’s official visits to Berkshire) has been knighted for his services to the Crown in the Queens New Year Honours list.
The former High Sheriff of Berkshire and ex-president of the Newbury and District Agricultural Society received the honour Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO) which is one of the only honours in the New Year list whose recipient is chosen directly by the Queen and not by the Government. The position was originally created during the reign of Henry VIII to act as Lieutenant and Captain General. Its present day role, however, is to attend any royal visits to Berkshire and to act as a stand in for absent members of the royal family who are unable to attend the function in person. “It is a wonderful honour and I feel it’s a personal thank you from the Queen,” Sir Wroughton commented. “It so often happens that awards end up with the individual but that is misleading because the support and help of the many, many people around me is enormous. So, this award is also a tribute to them.” For more information on Sir Wroughton go to: www.answers.com/topic/philip-wroughton
