Royals turn Pirate

On Tuesday over £12,000 was raised at a “Pirates of the Caribbean”-themed auction organised by READING wives and girlfriends.

The WAGs, who have been raising money for a variety of local charities, have now made more than £70,000 since September for the Royal Families Appeal.

Items to go under auction included two press passes for Saturday’s game against Sunderland, a framed and signed Nicky Shorey England shirt and a paint balling session for 30 people at Skirmish in High Wycombe.

As well as the Royals stars were celebrities from the ‘Pirates’ series, Reading’s own Winston Ellis who plays Palifico, and Clive Ashborn.

Club captain Graeme Murty bought an eight-foot stuffed polar bear for his baby daughter and a private dance lesson for two with Strictly Come Dancing star Ian Waite.

The highest bidder of the night was Portsmouth’s Icelandic defender Hermann Hreidarsson who paid £4,000 for eight box tickets to see the Spice Girls at the O2 arena.

Mrs Shorey and Olga Gunnarsson arranged the evening with the help of Sue Roberts.

Amanda Hahnemann, wife of goalkeeper Marcus, and Karen Murty, Graeme’s wife, first launched the appeal last September to coincide with the Royals’ first ever top-flight season.

On New Year’s Day Reading and Portsmouth have a match at Madejski Stadium. Costco, which is near to the Madejski Stadium, has offered parking for £5. All the proceeds will go to the Royal Families charity.

Daisy’s Dream and the Berkshire Cancer Centre are the two main charities selected to benefit from this year’s Royal Families appeal.
