How BinB Helped Microsoft Raise £8000 for the NSPCC

You may recall reading about the inaugural Microsoft Christmas Fair in Business in Berkshire at the end of last year. The event took place in Reading on 30th November and was hailed a huge success by organisers and participants, attracting over 350 visitors and raising £8000 for the NSPCC.

The advertisement of the fair in the pages of Business in Berkshire as well as in our newsletters attracted a great deal of interest. Indeed many of the traders who took part in the event, particularly those based in the Reading area , decided to participate in the fair after seeing it in Business in Berkshire.

“Microsoft has fundraised for the NSPCC for many years but this year we thought we would try something a little different in the form of a Christmas Fair” explained organiser Helen Rutherford. “The event was extremely well received by traders and visitors alike” she told Business in Berkshire. Tanya Buck from Woodley Goldsmiths said, “We enjoyed the Christmas fair and felt we got great exposure for the company
which being so local in Woodley was what we wanted.” Following the success of the fair, Microsoft will plan a similar event next year.

The article we published included a call to action asking vendors of decorations, cards, Christmas gifts, services, or vouchers to contact Microsoft if they wished to secure a stall for the event. In exchange, they were asked to donate either a £100 pledge or 5% of sales made on the day – all of which were given to the NSPCC.

Helen wanted to let all vendors who took part know the difference that they have made by raising this amount of money. £8,000 (half of which was contributed by Microsoft as part of their matching program – Microsoft match every £1 raised by employees for charity) could enable the NSPCC to pay for at least 30 children to receive a full course of counselling to help them to recover from abuse. Counselling a child can take a long time, as the effects are deep and long lasting. A counsellor may need to spend many hours with a child over a period of nearly 4 months to get them on the road to recovery. Research shows that children who are not supported after abuse are much more likely to suffer re-abuse as they are left vulnerable and lacking in confidence.

The story represents yet another success in which Business in Berkshire were proud to play a part.
