Work Life Balance
It's very easy to get absorb by work these days, especially if you enjoy what you do. But you must remember to take a break every hour. Have an apple rather than a chocolate biscuit! Drink the non fizzy water. Don't pile into the treats cupboard at 10pm. And most importantly, have a switch off time.

I love what I do and can quite happily work 24/7. I have constant variety in the requests that come my way and simply enjoy having a clear desk by the end of the day. Trouble was, this was becoming a need!

The result: I'd come in at 10pm, grab a treat, watch an hour of tele and then collapse into my bed. Up again at 7am to walk the dog and think about what I would do that day to move my business another step forward.

Well two weeks ago this bit me in the bum. I had a "funny turn" and am having a few tests - but I know what went wrong.

Ten years ago I flew to the USA on business and suffered a pulmonary embolism, a blood clot in the lung. Over the previous couple of months I had been touring Australia and the Far East, flying around, scuba diving, drinking heavily, smoking too much, etc. All things that aren't truly great for the body and I paid the price.

Two weeks ago I paid the price for working too hard. I don't smoke, or drink too much, I work too hard.

That evening I closed the office door at 6pm and took the 20 yard commute home and was a little lost! The kids soon took over, Charlie kicking my butt at pool (how's he got so good?) Didn't realise they played so often - but how could I? I was always in my shed!

No more midnight feasts, changed to still water, office closes at 6pm and I wind down as my body requires and gets a great night sleep. (I did before, but this is even better!)

The net effect is I'm calmer in my approach. The work still gets done. The dog is learning how to walk quicker and enjoying the extra half mile we drop in from time to time. The kids see more of their dad. Their dad sees more of them. Ali gets to talk to me about more than business! My battle plan is getting clearer day by day and luckily for me another day dawns.

Reminds me of that story again about the young bull and the old bull. You know the one I mean. You don't? Well read it here... now where is that link again? Tell you what, go do a search on Google for young bull and the old bull.

Then go and make yourself a cup of tea, or stand up and walk round your office, close the door an hour early tonight and go home and see the family. Remind yourself why you're working so hard.
