Franchises in Berkshire
Why do people buy into franchises?
The key drivers seem to be brand recognition (for a few franchises), the ease with which the banks will lend you the money and the feeling of being part of a group support structure.
With more and more people leaving the corporate world because the corporate can’t afford the ongoing support – General Motors in the USA have to pay out something like 5.5 billion dollars in benefits against sales of 3 billion… all because the unions did such a good job in the 50’s… anyone spot this doesn’t add up? – Rentokil spotted this trend and have pulled their pension programmes… taking the shit PR on the chin for the long term benefit of the organisation.
Bottom line on all this, is that you need to create your own pension plan and for me, Jon Davey, that means building a business that produces a reasonable profit each year that can take care of me and mine when I get bored with business and just want to surf! Which will probably be never… the getting bored bit… as l love what I do and that’s not all about making money… it’s also about having fun and adventures on the way.
As a small business with no track record looking for investment then the banks, in the UK, will not look favourably on you unless you’ve got a big house and no mortgage! The business angel is looking for easy money and therefore has no interest until you’ve proven the concept and so you are left to make it on your own.
For many, after years in a comfy office, going it alone is a scary concept and so people starting out look around for a family to join. Somewhere that can provide a support structure… or the appearance of a support structure. These tend to be franchise organisations offering a business opportunity for a nice slice of someone’s redundancy payment.
This is great where the concept is proven, has legs, provides the support structure and is on offer for a reasonable price. Where the motivation comes from helping you get a loan from the bank to set up, you’d better watch out. A smooth talking opportunist will help the naïve part with cash, that would probably be best spent, dare I say it, with a personal coach.
To build a business… a franchise or your own brand… it takes energy and tons of it!
What you really want is a support network you can call on for help as and when you need it. This may be simply for quick reassurance or just to talk business with someone… our friends and family don’t really want to talk shop!
