Silicon.com CIO Forum 27th September 2005
Silicon.com is a business news website with an Alexa ranking of just over 9000. The conference was entitled “Uncovering the secrets of success”

This was my second early morning in as many days. I am happy to get my butt out of bed early but prefer to start the day walking the dog, watching the sun rise and contemplating the day ahead.

Instead, I had two sleepless nights, ensuring I woke up early! The dog got his walk at 6:30am as even the sun is struggling to get his/her butt out of bed!!

Monday I was invited by Vince Golder to take part in his full day seminar on “The Secrets of Referral Marketing”. Vince has listened, rather than lectured, those he has met along the way and added structure to the information. This has enabled him to create a fantastic presentation on how to make the most of your customer base. A recent presentation to some big hitting consultants has lead to an offer he couldn’t refuse… Vince and I will be bringing you some useful stuff shortly… let him settle in to his new role first…

The day was excellent although a little long for me. Not used to being surrounded by “peoples” for a whole day, I need my own space in which to let ideas develop…

Tuesday was an invitation to take part in the Silicon CIO Forum. I had been identified as someone they wanted at their event… that’s a huge compliment in itself… I did phone to check they had got the right person! I was assured I was on their list… that felt great… the eagle has landed!!

I missed the first 10 minutes due to not getting up at 6:15!! I took my seat just in time for the key note speaker George Polk, CEO and founder of The Cloud. It was great to hear him speak about where he sees the technology going… I had a few minutes with him after the presentation and mentioned that if he was looking for sme’s to help him develop his solutions, we had an audience at BinB.

The day was well structured and organised by the Silicon team. The next main event saw The Establishment take on Captain Kirk! (It’s amazing the pictures people will allow to be published with their name against it!) The debate was on “The Private Sector Delivers Less Innovation in IT than the Public Sector”. Ian Taylor MP for the Public Sector and Jonathan Steel for the Private. The private sector won, the motion defeated… which is logical in a room full of private companies. There were around 6 people in the room from the Public sector and 200+ from Private enterprise. What was interesting to me was 30 plus voted in favour of the Public sector. Not enough to win but, in my eyes, significant to the debate.

My own opinion is that innovation comes from contented individuals. To thing up new ideas you need to understand yourself and the world around you. To be in this state of mind you can’t be chasing the $$$$. You need piece of mind and, I would suggest, being employed by the public sector gives you the security to allow your brain to come forth with ideas. These ideas will probably be best developed by the private sector where instant decision can be made but that’s stage 2.

Anyway, after lunch I decided that I’d be reassured of my position in the bigger game. Had some new ideas but all I really wanted to do was take Charlie to his swimming lesson… so I left the conference’s target rich environment to be home in time to enjoy quality time with one of the reasons why I work by so blummin hard… would you have done the same?
