Elton John - Madjeski Stadium, Reading 26th May 2005
What could I say... No!

I'll let Andy take up the story...

A Birthday to remember
I had the pleasure of a few friends company at the Elton John Gig the other day – Jon Davey came along at the last minute and it was all organised by my friend, sometime radio presenter and kids party organiser – Esther – who also brought along Martin and Jenny – who were well organised with a few beers and loads of water.

We arrived in good time after a hell on wheels journey on the M25, just getting home in time to meet everyone at my house.

We departed happy in the knowledge that it was my Birthday and all was well.

Contrary to popular myth (created by the local radio stations Madejski Stadium and a few others) the M4 was as clear as a bell. We got to the Stadium with plenty of time to spare so we thought we would have a hotdog roll and a packet of crisps – plenty of crisps but at 7.15 the caterers had run out of Hotdogs – a crime not to go unpunished methinks as they did that just as we got to the front of a very long queue.

Anyway on with the gig. We had seats fairly high up, on the side of the stadium and I was impressed by the overhanging roof protecting us from the uhhhh, rain? No, no rain, plenty of sunshine though and then LULU hit us with her strong vocals and we got in the mood.

LULU performed more than adequately and got us all used to the slightly muffled sound system – open air concerts are prone to sound problems but I thought that the engineers could have done a slightly better job.

LULU went off after about an hour and frankly that was just enough! Half an hour later and filled up with beer we saw Elton saunter (Can a person THAT short saunter?) onto the stage with a roar of greeting from his adoring fans (yes, I am one of them – sad but true). EJ is without doubt a fantastic live performer – the sound engineer had got his act together and the stomping chords of Bennie and the jets hit us like a steam roller, quickly followed by most of his old favourites and a couple of new numbers that didn’t quite come up to the mark, the concert finished very nicely with my particular favourites, Don't let the sun go down on me and love lies bleeding in my hand - I dunno, sad songs just make me realise how very lucky I am!

After pretty much every song EJ jumped up, pointed to all areas of the crowd and made sure we knew he knew, we were there. All in all, a great night out seeing a world class performer in what I would say should become a regular venue for live events – I knew there was another use for all those football stadiums – make the season shorter I say, and give us more of the same from Elton and his co-horts.

Congratulations to all concerned on providing a great venue and a great performer……

Thanks to Esther of www.besteverparties.co.uk for making my birthday special....

And thanks to Andy for the invite!
