Easter weekend 'spells DIY disasters'
Easter weekend 'spells DIY disasters'
The nation's love affair with DIY continues, with a fifth of Britons planning to fix up their homes this Easter.
However, before picking up a hammer or a paintbrush, consumers are being urged to ensure they have adequate insurance in place in the case of a DIY mishap.
Insurance provider Churchill and price comparison website Moneysupermarket have both warned about home improvement risks.
"DIY disasters" see more than 200,000 people hospitalised every year, Moneysupermarket insurance director Richard Mason said.
He urged potential DIYers to check whether their home insurance policy covers them for accidental damage.
Mr Mason warned that the costs could mount if a botched home improvement job starts impacting on others.
"A badly installed bathroom could be even more disastrous if it causes a leak that allows water into your neighbour's house, as you could be left with a bigger and more costly problem on your hands," he said.
Churchill claims that the typical insurance claim for accidental damage amounts to £540, with recorded incidents ranging from paint spillages to hammering a nail into electric cables.
