British workers enjoy £24bn bonus payout
British workers have taken home £24 billion worth of performance-related bonuses over the last year, research has found. Nearly one in three workers - 29 per cent - were rewarded with a bonus, with the average payment found to be £1,758, a study by Birmingham Midshires found. However, this figure has decreased from £3,858, with bonus payments being spread among twice as many recipients over the last 12 months. Birmingham Midshires' director of savings operations, Jason Robinson, revealed that over a third of people are "squirreling away their bonus", rather splashing out on treats such as holidays (12 per cent) or retail therapy (eight per cent). "It is important to shop around for the best rate when deciding where to put your hard earned cash and choose a competitive savings account," he pointed out. The study also revealed that women lost out in terms of the size of their bonus, with the average man receiving £2,130 compared to £1,213 received by a typical female. However, the researchers pointed out that this was probably largely down to the disproportionate amount of females who occupy part-time roles.
