Company Car Drivers Waste 11 Days a Year
A recent survey by the RAC Foundation in conjunction with www.companycardriver.co.uk threw up a disturbing statistic: 20% of company car drivers waste more than 11 days every year stuck in traffic jams.
The survey, which found most drivers wasting between one or two hours each week stuck in congestion, concluded that 40% of company car drivers would welcome more opportunities to work from home whilst 25% longed for more flexible working hours to help them avoid the busiest rush hour periods on the roads.
Despite these results, it seems over 50% of companies are reluctant to support the notion of company car drivers adopting more flexible working arrangements, even though they frequently end up wasting so much time at the wheel.
Indeed 10% of the company car drivers surveyed admitted to falling asleep at the wheel – a practice that accounts for around 20% of road accidents on British roads. The RAC Foundation recommends that companies ensure they do not subject employees to unnecessary risk by expecting them to drive for long hours at a stretch or forego frequent rest breaks.
Of all the environmental and time saving initiatives available to businesses, online working, followed by low car emission purchasing and home working were the most likely to be adopted by a company.
The RAC Foundation also urged the government to provide more help and advice for fleet managers, offer better alternatives for travel, incentives for business use, and continued commitment to improving the strategic road structure.
