West Berkshire Motorists to Attend Speeding Courses |
|||
Speeding motorists in West Berkshire are to be educated as an alternative to receiving penalty points on their driving licence, according to Thames Valley Police.
Drivers who are caught speeding will now be given the option of attending a course instead of getting penalty points in a bid to improve road safety and awareness about the dangers of speeding. Malcolm Collis, safety manager in Thames Valley Police Roads Policing Operational Command Unit, commented that the move would help the police to enforce speed limits, as well as re-educating drivers rather than simply penalising them. "Expanding the Speed Awareness Scheme will give us the opportunity to educate even more drivers about why speed is so dangerous," he said. "This scheme is already very successful with feedback from many sceptical drivers saying it changed the way they drive." Mr Collis added that the police are doing everything they can to ensure that fewer people are killed on the roads. The scheme includes three courses - one for speeders who break the limit in urban areas; another for motorists caught speeding on faster roads and motorways; and the third for those drivers caught doing excessively high speeds. The courses are all designed to make drivers think about the way they drive and about the threat they pose to both their own safety and that of other road users.
