A young, skilled Berkshire engineer has shown she has the business brain to break into the highly skilled engineering industry by scooping an international award.
Tanya Budd, 18, of Winnersh, picked up one of the major awards in the International Science and Engineering Fair in the US. She won the award for her device designed to help sailors who have fallen overboard and may suffering from hypothermia. They can use her Hypo Hoist device to help themselves out of the water. SeaSafe, an Isle of Wight manufacturer, has already picked up her design. The £2,600 prize is not the only one that her science savvy has earned her. Ms Budd, who is a student of Waingels College, Reading, has already been handed two Isambard Brunel Awards as well as being named as the Young Engineer for Britain. She told the Daily Telegraph: "I never dreamed when I entered Young Engineer for Britain last year that it would lead to so much. "I'm so pleased that I decided to take up engineering for a career. It is so exciting and I feel I have an amazing opportunity with my life."
