Audio-visual prices fall 74% in decade |
The cost of audio-visual equipment has seen a steep fall over the past year, according to an industry price index.
The index produced by the online bank Egg, which measures the cost of a basket of goods and services, found that audio-visual gadgets had already fallen by 2.1 per cent in price in 2006 alone and prices had plummeted by 74 per cent in just a decade. The company said that the cost of being a "gadget freak" had fallen by more than 50 per cent. UK residents now spend £13 billion a year on electrical goods according to the figures. Back in 1996, those same goods would have cost over £26 billion, the bank said. "No other area has seen such dramatic price shifts as audio-visual items," said Alison Wright, chief marketing officer at Egg. "Whilst more traditional forms of entertainment have seen huge price increases of up to 65 per cent over the past decade, the price of electrical goods such as DVD players and personal computers has plummeted by over 50 per cent." she added. Books and newspapers had seen a price increase over the same period. |
