UK business fights back against hack attacks |
UK businesses are fighting back against hackers, a new government-backed report has suggested.
Figures revealed that 62 per cent of UK firms suffered from security incidents in 2005, a fall from the 2004 figure of 74 per cent. The Information Security Breaches survey also indicated that this decrease had coincided with higher spending on security. Small firms unable to invest in professional security help seemed to be the worst affected by attacks. "What we are seeing in 2006 is that virus infections has dropped by one third," Chris Potter, the PriceWaterhouseCoopers partner who carried out the work, told the BBC. "In 2002 and 2004 the news was pretty gloomy throughout, but in 2006 there's some cause for optimism." There was also evidence that firms will have to stay vigilant to keep the gains they have made over hackers. Nearly two-thirds expect there will be more security incidents over the coming 12 months than there were over the last. A total of 60 per cent of UK companies also believe it will be harder to detect security breaches in the future. |
