Channel Reading hits digital TV |
||||||
Residents of Reading now have access to a high-tech new service that allows them to access important information about the city through their digital television.
They will no longer have to get out of their chair to find out an array of information on council services, but will be able to access it at the touch of a remote control button. Anyone with digital TV services from Sky, NTL or Telewest, should now be able to access the "Reading On" service, which got up and running last month. For the price of a local rate telephone call, residents will be able to request application forms for benefits, get advice about council tax, report fly tipping or abandoned vehicles and report a missed bin collection. Future possibilities for the service are even more exciting. The council is also looking at ways people can check bus journeys and link into local libraries using the technology. Booking doctor's appointments through the system is also a possibility. Jo Lovelock, Reading's deputy leader, said: "This is another example of Reading Borough Council using government funded technology to provide customers with access to council services 24/7 and trying to reach all the community through the use of digital television. "This will benefit those Reading people without internet access, promoting equality for all our residents and the wider community," she added.
