Out of the frying pan into the…bus?
|
Maidenhead has become the first place in the country to have a public bus powered by vegetable oil.
The 'veggie bus', operated by Courtney Coaches, went into operation at the start of the week. Using waste vegetable oil is a greener way to travel compared to diesel, the usual fuel used in buses. "We are delighted that Courtney have chosen the Royal Borough as the place to put their first veggie bus on the road," said Antony Wood, the council's lead member for traffic and transport. "At a time when the council is actively seeking new ways to cut pollution and do everything we can to make services as green as possible, it is a very encouraging sign that council-funded bus services will be flying the eco-friendly flag." Jackie Matthews from Courtney Coaches, explained that the bus, used as a park and ride shuttle between the town centre and a local supermarket, is the first to go into public local service in the country. "We have a major commitment to making our buses as environmentally friendly as possible and we are investing in our fleet to make the conversion to vegetable fuel by the end of this year," she said. With all the buses on Courtney's menu soon to go veggie, it could mean that diesel has had its chips in the town. |
