£78m development plans for city station
|
Plans have been unveiled to plough £78 million into Berkshire's busiest commuter railway station.
Reading station has often been a difficult place to commute from, as it has a reputation for producing bottlenecks. But now proposals backed by the city's council would see four additional added to the station, with an extension added to an existing one. "Its lack of capacity affects all train services to the west including Wales and Cornwall, as well as train services to Birmingham and the north," said a council spokesman to the BBC. He added that the new plans would "benefit the thousands of commuters who use Reading station everyday". Network Rail will be the organisation that now decides if the plans will become reality. Last year, the station was handed a national safety and security award. The honour took into account design, security, management, and passenger safety. |
