Berkshire firm leads the way in RoHS compliance |
||||||
A company in Berkshire has announced compliance with the EU restriction of the use of hazardous materials (RoHS) directive, months before it goes into effect.
IGEL Technology said that thin clients in the Silver, Compact, Winestra and Premium series are already produced according to the RoHS regulation. The firm also boasted that it is complaint with the waste from electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) directive. The RoHS rule states that producers of electronic or electric equipment must avoid using materials such as lead, cadmium and chromium. It comes into force from July 1st 2006. The rule was brought in to reduce the number of hazardous materials disposed in the European Union each year. It will also impose an import-embargo on equipment which is not compliant with RoHS. IGEL produces a number of thin clients – computers which forgo a full blown operating system, relying on a head-end server to provide a desktop and applications. The systems are compatible with applications delivered through Windows and Linux environments. Not only does the deployment of thin clients save IT managers from maintaining many separate full desktop systems, it can also save on power. IGEL said its systems use 50 to 70 per cent less resources than full blown PCs.
