Berkshire's big screen mansion

A mansion that put Berkshire up on the big screen when it featured in a film production is laying on a revamped exhibition, giving visitors a behind-the-scenes peek at the costumes worn by the stars.
Basildon Park, near Pangbourne, was used in a large-scale film version of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Berkshire became the centre of the British film industry for the weeks during which the film was shot and fans can now not only visit the surroundings featured in the film, but can check out the wardrobe worn by the movie's Hollywood stars. A total of eight outfits worn by the actors will be on display. Matthew Macfadyen starred in the film as the enigmatic Mr Darcy, with Keira Knightley playing the heroine of the Austen classic, Elizabeth Bennet. The mansion was closed to the public while the film was being shot, but its keepers are now making up for that by giving new visitors the VIP treat. A whole host of memorabilia and signed photographs will be on display too. Last summer, the park's management had to appeal for volunteers to help staff the estate, as thousands of Austen fans flocked to the 18th century mansion for a glimpse of the film's location.
