Online marketing booms in the UK
The amount spent on online marketing in the UK has shot up last year, despite a slowing of advertising spending overall.
Figures produced for the Advertising Association indicate that while marketing spending increased by 2.1 per cent as a whole, a fall from the six per cent 2004 rise, spending directed towards online forms of advertising increased by 73.1 per cent in 2005. That took the total amount spent on internet-based marketing to £1.13 billion in the UK. Online classified advertising rose 78 per cent last year to £748m, while online display advertising increased by 64.3 per cent to £383m. Marketing on outdoor and television platforms also increased by 5.8 per cent and 3.6 per cent respectively. Other potential marketing platforms suffered from falling revenues, including the press. National newspapers saw a three per cent sink in their advertising revenues, with regional papers suffering even more as they pulled in 4.4 per cent less. Despite the fact that it still raked in twice the amount of marketing spending as the internet in 2005, the popularity of direct mail advertising also sank by 3.9 per cent.
