£47 million for Berkshire town improvements |
||||
Residents of Reading can look forward to a range of improvements over the coming months as the town's council has announced that it is to begin a major programme of projects.
A total of £47 million will be injected into developments across the borough and the council says that every Reading resident will reap the benefits. More than £9 million has been earmarked for improving the borough's public transport services and £6.5 million will go towards education and community projects to improve the area for Reading's young people. Money has also been set aside for improving the area's recycling schemes, making the Berkshire town a greener place to live. Reading Borough Council leader David Sutton said: "When we announced the Council's budget for 2006-07, we said that it was a budget which would make possible a major programme of new investment in Reading. Now we are announcing the detail of that investment. "It means better schools, better roads, better care for the elderly, better children's services, and new money for recycling, for training and skills, for leisure centres, for the bus service and for public housing. "It is excellent news for Reading, designed to keep our town moving forward," he added. On top of that investment a further £22 million has been identified for 2007-08, a figure that Reading Borough Council is expecting to increase as more funding is identified.
