Berkshire roads to get high-tech twist
|
Some of Berkshire's roads are going to be given a high-tech twist with the introduction of some new electronic road signs.
The technology should help make the county's roads safer as well as 21st century.
Passing cars activate the signs, which then illuminate a warning or message to drivers. In the past they have been used to warn drivers that they are travelling too fast of warning them about a hazard that lies ahead.
A figure of £50,000 has been allocated for the new signs after a council budget meeting last week.
Executive West Berkshire councillor Keith Chopping said: "Where these signs will be deployed depends on the outcome of talks with parish councils.
"What is certain, however, is that wherever they go they will undoubtedly improve safety at each location for all road users."
Local parishes in the west Berkshire region will be invited to contribute additional funding to help the scheme spread to more locations across the area. High demand for the modern signs is expected.
