SMEs missing out on web marketing
Small businesses are failing to market themselves on search engines, according to research by Fasthosts.

The website hosting firm said that 49 per cent of SMEs had not submitted their website to a search engine, and added that 66 per cent of potential customers would probably never look beyond two search engines to find a product or service.

Merely taking out advertising on sites such as Google was also not enough, the company suggested, as a third of consumers admitted that they never click on sponsored links. Instead, firms need to work on their search engine optimisation to gain a foothold in natural results.

Andrew Michael, chief executive of Fasthosts, said: "In 2006, no business can afford to be invisible online, yet too many SMEs are.

"I was amazed to see that SMEs are not considering how much they personally use search engines when it comes to the importance of ranking for their own company. If you are not listed on Google, your web site might as well not be online."

The poll also found that the majority of users rely on Google as their major search engine.
