High street work bids to boost Berkshire business
Work will begin today that will enhance the main shopping street in Newbury.

Local authorities hope that the work carried out on Northbrook Street will help boost the number of consumers visiting the street and give a shot in the arm for businesses in the area.

The project aims to bring out Newbury's historic character. New paving from Bridge Street to West Street, new street lighting and furniture are all designed to play on this asset of the town.

West Berkshire executive councillor, Emma Webster, said: "We are moving forward to maximise the existing assets of Newbury and create a town to be really proud of.

The refurbishment work to Northbrook Street comes after the success of similar work carried out on Bartholomew Street, which bumped up business for traders in the area and improved its access to the town centre.

Councillor Webster added: "Designs for both streets aim to complement local architecture and capitalise on the historic character of Newbury."

She also stated that the council had aimed to minimise disruption by coordinating the refurbishment with the installation of some gas piping by the utilities company, Transco.
