Biking in Berkshire just got easier
|
Cyclists in Berkshire received a boost today, when a substantial investment was announced that should see over £100,000 spent on some of the county's cycling infrastructure.
West Berkshire made the announcement, saying that the money will come from its own investment as well as contributions from developers.
More cycleways will appear in the area and money will also be spent on quiet, country lanes in order to attract cyclists. Recreational cycle routes should also see some of the money, which will be used to improve the right of way for cyclists.
New cycle racks will appear to serve Newbury's Northbrook Street and Market Place and school cycle safety and awareness promotions will be taking place in Berkshire schools.
Council Leader Graham Jones said: "Cycling plays a key part in our aim of making West Berkshire 'clean and green'.
"I'm pleased that our budget should show us able to build on the investment of previous years and increase further the cycling credentials of the district."
Berkshire residents could benefit substantially from travelling on two wheels, with the British Medical Association claiming that cycling just 30 minutes a day can add significantly to life expectancy.
