Berkshire schools get top marks
|
Secondary schools in Berkshire have continued their success with great standings in the government's achievement and attainment tables.
West Berkshire council has welcomed the results and congratulated children and staff.
Graham Pask, executive councillor for children and young people, said: "Students and teachers have worked hard to achieve high standards.
"Overall, 60.8 per cent of students across the district achieved five or more GCSE grades at A* to C, maintaining west Berkshire's position in the top attaining local authorities nationally."
For the ten maintained secondary schools in west Berkshire, 61.9 per cent of students made the grade with five or more top GCSEs, with six out of the ten schools improving on performance from last year.
Andy Tubbs, chief advisor for schools improvement in west Berkshire, commented on the government's new measure for schools that takes key English and maths skills into account.
He said: "The council welcomes this additional focus on functional key skills. This year, 50.3 per cent of students in West Berkshire schools achieved 5+ grades A* to C including English and mathematics.
"This is an improvement from 49.6 per cent in 2004 and is well above the national average."
