Berkshire thrown back in time as hand grenade found
Two Berkshire gardeners dug up more than they bargained for yesterday after they found an old World War II hand grenade.

The gardeners were working in some communal gardens at the back of Phoenix Court in Norreys Drive, Maidenhead when they saw something unusual under a nearby bush.

On discovering it was a hand grenade the police were called, who promptly placed a safety cordon around the gardens.

Army bomb disposal experts were then called in to inspect the device.

Police now believe that the grenade dates back to World War II and is of US design. How it came to be in the gardens is unclear, but the location used to be a landfill site so the grenade could have re-emerged from that.

The bomb disposal team took the device to Ockwells Park, where it was safely detonated in a controlled explosion.

The discovery comes a month after a different grenade mysteriously appeared in the garden of a Travelodge in Bracknell. On that occasion, police were equally mystified.
